The Maine music scene…is it ready for Creative Commons Licensing?

An article I wrote, extolling the virtues of Creative Commons licensing has just been published on the Portland Press Herald’s NXT blog. Here’s an excerpt:

Each month when preparing the next compilation for the website I run, I scour the internet for shining examples of music that’s released under a Creative Commons license. I always find plenty of excellent music from all over the world that meets that criteria. Each time I look for these musical gems, I quietly hope that one of the artists I discover will be from my home state of Maine (there’s nothing I’d love to do more than to promote bands from here). Alas, after 18 of these compilations, I’ve yet to find one Maine music artist utilizing this important tool that’s so easily at their disposal.

I certainly hope so! I was actually one of the first to adopt CC’s predecessor within days of its original creation waaaaay back at the dawn of open source & Linux in the early to mid 90’s….for my flagship Web site (Mac OS Rumors) at the time, but also for many other projects since. I find it rather silly to think that traditional copyright will be of much use to the typical self-employed, small-group or other non-corporate creative person whether “professional” or “amateur”…..as such already faded distinctions have blurred all the more with time.

Also, I couldn’t say enough good things about anything that involves Trent Reznor and/or Nine Inch Nails; I’ve been with them since the pre-Pretty Hate Machine days and TR is of course a super busy man who’s met lots of people like you & I along the way….but he and myself have traded a few emails over the years as I have been fortunate enough to do with a smattering of other “famous” people I immensely respect through my prominent Mac “guru” career and attending Macworld Expos over the years, etc etc…..

Simply can’t say enough good things about Trent & all the things he does just about…..even for those people to whom the mere name NIN represents ideas about his music that are waaay off base for those of us who’ve actually delved deeply into that work….
